We followed Airways around on their European tour supporting The Maine. Here is how it went.
Starting out to a packed Gloria Theatre in Cologne, Airways kick off their week with ‘Slow’, a song which despite frontman Jake’s almost motionless and expressionless delivery, has a groove to it that you can’t deny dancing to. The band delivers a strong list of songs to win over a previously unfamiliar audience, including ‘One Foot’ which got the crowd chanting along to its catchy chorus in no time.
Of course, it’s not a first day of tour if nothing goes wrong. During last year’s single ‘Alien’, Jamie’s cue on bass threatened to blow the other guys’ eardrums, causing the band to play the first verse three times before being able to run through the whole track. Luckily, no one minded as it meant we got to learn the lyrics and sing along flawlessly last time around.
Over the next days, the band pushed ‘Alien’ to set opener to get it out of the way, and everything ran smoothly from there. After a couple of smaller shows - Antwerp being only 100-150 people and Paris being small due to being on a boat (!) - the tour picked back up for Airways with for most part of the afternoon the majority of people in line in Amsterdam being fans of Airways, rather than headliners The Maine. You can only imagine the crowd participation and energy throughout the set from both the band and fans alike.
Concluding the tour in the O2 Forum Kentish Town, the band delivered another outstanding performance to their biggest audience yet. With fans who followed the tour now being able to sing back the lyrics, it was easily the best show the boys had played that week.
As Airways finished their set every night with 2017’s ‘Mate’, hearing Jake plead ‘Can’t you help me, mate?’, they really convinced us to do help them (mate) and tell everyone to seriously check these guys out, as we have no doubt they have great things ahead of them.
Warning: Jake does not appreciate bad jokes, Jamie will get sick on a boat, Brian does not appreciate beer being spilled over his flip-flops and Alex might throw set-lists at your face.
