All Better are back with their first single ‘Let Go’ of their sophomore EP ‘How It All Worked Out’ - out 14 June, 2019. Here, we speak to guitarist Chris Childs and drummer Sam Perkins about their influences, their ‘definitely not pop punk’ sound and their new releases.

Are you excited to play Washed Out festival?

Sam: Yes! Last year we were on first at Quadrant, it’s nice to a year later be in a bigger room and be on much later.

Chris: There’s always a lot of mates and bands that we’ve played with. It’s a nice day where we all get to hang out and get drunk and play music obviously, that’s the most important thing.

How did you guys start out as a band?

Chris: All of our old bands used to play gigs together and one day Nick, the renowned drummer, was like “I’ve written a lot of songs, do you want to jam them?” We were expecting three or four half written songs, but he send us 30 finished tracks.

Which bands do you take influence from for your music?

Sam: We have a shared enjoyment of early 2000s bands like Say Anything, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy. A lot of that genre seemed to have the same format and it’s quite fun for us to try and do something that’s a little bit different.

You describe yourself as ‘definitely not pop punk’, how would you describe your sound then?

Chris: It’s not pop punk as people think about it now, it’s the old school stuff with a newer poppy twist on it. As if Jimmy Eat World had a baby with Katy Perry and was raised by wolves, something like that.

‘Let Go’ was released two weeks ago, how has the response been?

Sam: Really good! We’ve been very fortunate to be put on a few Spotify playlists and it’s impressive how quickly your listens go up. The song itself has got the bridge which has elements we haven’t used before like the tempo changes and how it slows down, people seem to really like it.

How is the upcoming EP ‘How It All Worked Out’ different from your previous one?

Sam: There’s a couple tracks that are more poppy or more grunge like, we make sure each track has something characteristic to stick out from the others. It’s different but it definitely ties in with the first one. The note that ends the first EP starts the second, we like the idea that you can listen to them one after the other and it can play through like an album.

What’s planned for the future of All Better?

Chris: We’ve got a couple of tours coming up and are doing some shows in the week of the EP release and just after that we’re going back to Europe on a longer tour. There will be stuff happening.
