Gork | interview

Punk six-piece Gork have ventured out of Bristol with the release of their single ‘Spoons’. Here, we talk to guitarist and vocalist Ed, drummer Elliot and guitarist Sam about their tongue in cheek style.

Are you excited to play Washed Out festival here in Brighton?

Ed: Yes! It’s our first time playing in Brighton! We did 25 gigs in Bristol last year and the last two weeks have seen our first gigs outside of Bristol.

How did you guys start out?

Sam: It started as a bit of a joke. We just booked a recording studio because we had a bit of time, then it just snowballed to a lot of mates from school that we invited and we made that first ‘Get Porked’ EP. It all just went from there.

What’s your creative process like?

Ed: It’s very sporadic, it’s just what hits you at the time. Ben writes a lot of poems so they start out like that and we jam them in the flat and take it to practice like “we’ve got this” and then there’s a song.

What reactions do you get to lyrics like on ‘Bad Spinach’?

Elliot: We just kind of laugh.

Ed: It’s very tongue in cheek. So many bands take themselves so seriously, they aren’t actually having fun. Our sole purpose is to have as much fun as possible and just enjoy it. We have very silly humour.

Your single ‘Spoons’ came out last month, tell us about it.

Elliot: It’s a taster more than anything. It doesn’t really give anything away for people who haven’t seen us or heard us, it’s very different to our first EP.

Ed: We’re almost done with the actual EP which is more what Gork is actually about.

How do you translate the craziness of your music to your live performance?

Elliot: We throw veg about. There’s often a cabbage being ripped apart and we used to shake broccolis as well.

Sam: We just go crazy and enjoy it. We’re all mates and we’re not doing anything too serious so we just enjoy it, be daft and have a laugh really.
