Their name might not sound familiar yet, but their sound is an instant classic. Describing their music as “violin-driven pop punk by sad boys”, Postcards From The Moon recently released their second EP ‘Me Without You’ and have already more than quadrupled their listeners with their first single ‘Just Make Sure You’re Happy’.

Here, we speak to vocalist Caleb Rangel about their new found success, the idea behind the EP and the influences that helped create their classic-yet-fresh pop punk sound.

Congratulations on the success of ‘Just Make Sure You’re Happy’! Did you expect such a big response compared to your previous releases?

Thank you so much, the response has been amazing! We had high hopes and went into it with the mind-set that it would do well. We didn’t do great with the promotion for our first release so we definitely had a bigger game plan this time around. We’re happy to see that people are getting excited for it.

How is ‘Me Without You’ different from your last release?

‘Everything Cliché’ consisted of a lot of high paced songs, while ‘Me Without You’ focuses on the slower songs. Overall I think it’s sounding a lot better, from lyrics to music to production.

Tell us about the idea behind ‘Me Without You’.

It’s supposed to be the story of what happened after her. The songs take place after we broke up and are a reflection of the mind-set I was in at the time. Each song has its own purpose in explaining how I was without her.

The violin is very prominent on the new EP. Is this your way of standing out?

We didn’t have that in mind when introducing the violin. Our only goal was to utilise our strengths and having a violin is a huge one. We didn’t do it to stand out, but it does and we’re not complaining.

How did PFTM start out and get the nickname ‘Sad Boys of San Antonio’?

It started out with myself starting an acoustic project, which soon turned into a full band project after finding all the members through school, social media and shows I played. For the nickname, someone once said it to us and we just rolled with it. It had a nice ring to it and no one does sad like PFTM.

Who are the main influences for your music?

Our influences would be bands like A Rocket To The Moon, The Maine, Mayday Parade, Simple Plan, We The Kings and The Summer Set, but we definitely don’t try to mimic anyone. I’ve never found influence through other people for lyrics, I only write songs when I’m feeling it. We just created these songs and tried to find our own sound, I hope we executed that right.
