Beach Weather - Chit Chat (EP review, Moon Invites Madness)

Just a bit more than a year after the start of their band, the men of Beach Weather release their brilliant, second 6 track EP ‘Chit Chat’. This new release is fairly different from the band’s first EP, What A Drag, with what they gained a relatively big fanbase for such a young band, but the charm of Chit Chat will have no trouble expanding their fanbase even more. Even though the EP was released in the months leading up to cold winter days, the music gives off a summery vibe that makes you want to go to the park (or beach) and sit in the sun chatting to your friends (possibly with a bottle of wine within arm’s reach).

The EP starts off with the title track Chit Chat, which from the first second makes it impossible to sit still without bobbing your head to the infectious melodies and beats that will continue throughout the entire album.

Home Movies, the second song on the EP, slows things down a little while still keeping the catchiness that forms the base of Beach Weather’s music. Nick Santino sings about memories with a past lover that he can’t stop thinking about and how he wishes he could let go of those memories, the sadness of the lyrics is uplifted by upbeat, electric melodies that make this song really easy to listen to.

The third song of ‘Chit Chat’ is a love song about two imperfect people falling for each other, with lyrics in the likes of ‘you’ve been looking for a wreck like me, a perfect catastrophic harmony’ and ‘I’ve been searching for a drug like you, cause I just want to be someone’s disaster’. The instrumentals are slightly more rock than the other songs on the EP, but the (again) catchy melody makes it easy to enjoy the track’s big riffs.

Goddess, the EP’s 4th track, gives off an old vibe with a 70s style intro, lyrics that say ‘don’t stop, baby, don’t preach. Baby you’re a goddess’ and even a saxophone solo. This song works really well on ‘Chit Chat’ since it still has all of the fun beats and summery vibes, but it stands out from the other tracks which adds a bit of diversity to the EP.

The EP’s 5th track, Tremors, resembles their previous work most with groovy melodies that will always remind you of summer and lyrics like ‘swim in the day, swim in the night, swim in the wrong or right’ and ‘you feel this way forever, I only feel it when she tremors’.

The album finishes with Sex, Drugs, Etc., another song that stands out from the others on the album. The song has the typical catchy melody of the band, but other than that I’m not really a big fan of this song, the lyrics don’t really say a lot and it feels like there’s too much happening, whereas all the other songs have some clear vocals, this track is just covered in excessive noise.

Overall Chit Chat is a brilliant album, at the first listen it might not sound as good as What A Drag, but give it another spin and you’ll start to love it. The whole EP is easy to listen to with its catchy melodies and fun beats and it will get you dancing or at least bobbing your head from the beginning to the end of the album (or at least the first 5 songs).
