Rock trio Press to MECO have just announced an October UK tour, following their triumphant debut at Slam Dunk Festival last month.
Drummer-and-vocalist Lewis Williams and guitarist-and-vocalist Luke Caley sat down with Eline Joling to discuss what their follow-up to 2018's 'Good Intent, Here’s To The Fatigue', their first album on Marshall Records, is shaping up to sound like, how "humbling" it was watching their "die-hard fans" sing their songs for them on their acoustic tour earlier this year, and making a record for themselves this time...

You did an acoustic tour at the start of this year. How did it compare from your standard show?
Luke: It's more intimate because you’re so exposed and everyone is engaged in a completely different way. You can play to 50 drunk people and they’re all gonna jump around if there’s a drum beat, but with the acoustic stuff it puts the songs on a pedestal. The songs have to be OK for people to engage with them, otherwise it’s just another person with a guitar.
Lewis: I think that tour brought out our die-hard fans, fans who want to hear the vocals a bit more stripped back. It was really humbling because at a lot of those shows we didn’t even have to really sing, people would know all the words and sing along.
There was three years in between the last two albums, do we have to wait that long for the next one?
Luke: We had the last one recorded in 2016, but we didn’t have a label to put it out on, so finally we settled for self-releasing it. Then Marshall Records came in last minute and we released it through them. Now that the infrastructure is there it shouldn’t take that long.
Lewis: We’re on it now. We’ll probably have some singles out this year. It’s nice to lay back and just write and get on with. Just focus on writing, which is good.
After 'Good Intent, Here’s To The Fatigue', which was quite moody, where do you see the sound going next?
Luke: Even moodier. We’re developing as songwriters. We’re learning to make more out of less, whereas before, we were trying to throw everything in the pot. We’re now figuring out how to do what we always wanted to do, but better.I’m really excited about the new stuff. Everyone might hate it, but at least we like it. This one is just for me and Lewis, this is our album.
Press to MECO kick off their UK tour at The Sugarmill in Stoke on October 2nd and conclude the run, which sees them supported by Chapter and Verse at The Boileroom in Guildford on October 26th.
