Saint Raymond - A Light That Blinds (EP review, Lizzie's Lowdown)

Two years after the release of his debut album ‘Young Blood’, Saint Raymond is back with his feel-good indie four-track ‘A Light That Blinds’.

In the month leading up to the release, Nottingham singer Callum Burrows (the mind behind Saint Raymond) already gave us a taste of what to expect for the EP with indie pop anthem ‘We Are Fire’ and the seductive ‘Nightcrawling’, which led to frequent airplay on both BBC’s Phil Taggart and Hugh Stephens’ shows.

The day before the release, Saint Raymond surprised us with yet another single. ‘Last Time’ is more stripped back than the other songs on the EP, making Saint Raymond’s powerful, warm vocals stand out more than on his more upbeat pop songs. The song breaks up the EP perfectly, giving us a moment to catch our breath from dancing, being positioned between two more instrumentally heavy songs.

‘A Light That Blinds’s opening track, ‘Younger’, sets us up for all of this by starting off quite calm and minimalistic, and slowly building up with more instrumentals leading up to Saint Raymonds’ signature upbeat, melodic indie pop. The song’s bridge, however, leans far more to the pop side, giving off some serious boyband vibes.

Overall, ‘A Light That Blinds’ covers four completely different songs that work together so well, providing diversity in a well-balanced collection of songs that will make it hard for you to sit still and not bob your head to its melodic tunes.
