The Amazons - The Amazons (album review, university assessment)

Reading four-piece The Amazons was already featured on the BBC Music Sound of 2017 shortlist as well as several other ones-to-watch lists, now they’re ready to prove themselves worthy of those placements with their 11-track debut ‘The Amazons’.

The album is full of rock head-bangers like the band’s previous releases over the past three years, including singles ‘Black Magic’ and ‘Junk Food Forever’. The album starts out strong, going straight in with big drums and guitars on the opening track ‘Stay With Me’. Throughout the album the emphasis stays heavily on the instrumentals to the point where for most songs the guitar riffs seem more important than the lyrics. On their debut, The Amazons have played it safe by not straying away too far from the standard rock music we expect from them, with the exception of the less heavy and slightly funky ‘Holy Roller’ and the would-be-very-welcome piano ballad ‘Palace’, which unfortunately was too weak to fit in with the rest of the album.
