Will Joseph Cook - Sweet Dreamer (album review, university assessment)

Updated: Mar 12, 2019

On the back of being featured in several ‘Ones to Watch’ and ’Introducing’ lists over the past year, Will Joseph Cook has built quite a following for himself. His timing for the release of his debut album ‘Sweet Dreamer’, therefore couldn’t have been any better. The 13-track album (which includes previous singles ‘Sweet Dreamer’, ‘Beach (I Wanna Make You Mine)’, ‘Take Me Dancing and ‘Girls Like Me), has Cook’s signature dance-y, carefree, sweet, summery vibe with infectious melodies, which is exactly what we need around the transition to the new season.

The artwork used for Cook’s debut perfectly reflects its songs, the bright blue sky and slice of orange mirror the album’s lightness and overall positive vibes, but the orange slice being of a blood orange instead of a regular one reflects the slightly bitter topics of some of the album’s lyrics. Carefree and celebratory songs such as ‘Take Me Dancing’ are broken up on the album by songs about negativity and the strive for optimism (‘Sweet Dreamer’ and ‘Alive’), break-ups (‘Light Of The Day’) and depression (‘Hands’), making the whole album a well-balanced piece.

The album’s closing track, ‘Water’s Gone Cold’ is a sombre ballad, completely standing out from the rest of Sweet Dreamer. Stripped back to a sparse sonic layout of just one guitar carried by Cook’s delicate vocals, ‘Water’s Gone Cold’ is like a hidden track at the end of the album, just there to remind us one more time of why we should all keep a close eye on Will Joseph Cook.
